Monkeys And Robots
The Creation
It's tough work being He-Man's arch-enemy, Skeletor. At the end
of the day, when all the chaos has settled and all of the battles
for the universe have been waged, what kind of life is there for
Skeletor? There's no retirement plan, there's no over-the-counter
medicine to suppress one's urges to wreak galactic havoc, and because
few ladies get weak-kneed from the skinless skull look, he has no
love life. What's a super-villain to do?

OCCUPATION
Sometimes fat children throw rocks at me.
WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO?
I hate fat children.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
Did I mention the thing about those damn dirty fat kids yet?
HUMOR INFLUENCES?
Bob Odenkirk / David Cross (Mr. Show), Chris Elliot, Joel Hodgson
(MST3K), the movie Freaked (not Freaks), Danny Chambers
on happyrobot.net and of
course the obligatory Kids in the Hall & The Simpsons.
WHAT IS THE M.O. OF MONKEYS & ROBOTS PRODUCTIONS?
My college major was advertising. I tried to put a robot into every
ad I did, and my copywriter tried to put a monkey into every ad
he did. M&R Productions was initially going to be an ad agency.
Luckily, I never had to work in advertising. Now I get paid to make
cartoons. I feel INCREDIBLY lucky.
D.W. GRIFFITH HAD INTOLERANCE, JAMES CAMERON HAD TITANIC,
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR TOM SHIRLEY?
We are working on two "possible" new cartoon ideas. One is called
"Sheriff Hippo". It was inspired by a picture from an old coloring
book of a hippo with a badge, with a caption that reads, "You're
going to jail". In the cartoon, the hippo will probably speak like
a little girl, and only say the one line, "You're going to jail",
at inappropriate moments.
The other idea is about a pirate captain that is obsessed with
finding treasure. He constantly conquers and ransacks other ships
that are obviously full of treasure, but the pirate captain always
gets upset and claims that there is no treasure there.
I am negotiating a possible deal to animate some audio sketches
for Howard Stern's "Channel 9" TV show. (Very sketchy situation).
